Our Mission

The broad mission of the Franco-American British Fund for the Study of Liberal Democracy is four fold.

First, we shall collapse the artificial distance between theory and practice by augmenting and enriching the classic academic study of politics … with vigorous exposure to the political realm itself in all its dynamic complexity.

Second, we shall provide students with a broad, vital and necessarily comparative perspective, both intellectual as well as practical, insofar as the nature, operation and evolution of our complex and longstanding political traditions.

Third, by integrating scholarly analysis with live participation and by anchoring scholarship itself in broader comparative study that transcends the limited scope of the nation state, we deepen our understanding of political systems and the national cultures that animate them.

Finally, by providing our students with ample opportunities to meet with elected leaders in democracies from across the world and ‘speak to truth to power’, we intend to expose them to all the qualities inherent to true leadership.
